Skiing at Sugar Bowl
Mammoth has had 15 feet of snow at the main lodge and 22 feet at the summit which is the most since 1987. Mammoth has now said that they will not close at all this year. That’s a first. They broke the record at Mammoth in just 16 days.
This blog commented on Californias ski situation last month but the record fall requires more detail.
I tried the skiing at Sugar Bowl last week and it was wonderful. The history of the place deserves a mention.
‘Sugar Bowl was founded by Hannes Schroll and a group of individual investors and is one of the few remaining privately owned resorts in the Lake Tahoe area. Sugar Bowl was the first ski area in California to install a chairlift and the first on the west coast to install a gondola lift‘ According to Wikipedia.
The resort comprise of 2 mountains, Mt Judah and Mt Lincoln and used to be part of the pioneers trail back in the 1800’s. The Roller Pass was a wagon trail that went through Donner and was used by both sellers and prospectors on the Emigrant Trail of their journey from the east coast trekking across the Sierra Nevada.
The original purchase price in 1927 was $10 for 700 acres, so going on what they charged me last week, they really are coining it in. I paid the original price 20 times over.
