The Interconnectivity of things

Life reflects life

A Scottish old age pensioner living an off grid life in the remote Highlands of Lochaber became seriously ill and sent an SOS that was picked up by a Response Center in Houston Texas.

This message was then relayed to Scotland and they sent an emergency helicopter and mountain rescue team to his aid.

‘The man, in his mid-seventies, lives alone in a cabin near Loch Treig, about 13 miles inland from Fort William. His SOS call was picked up on Sunday evening by the International Emergency Response Coordination Center in Houston, Texas, which organises emergency responses globally, and then relayed to the UK coastguard’s national operations centre in Fareham, Hampshire.’

They had no way of contacting him though, to ascertain the seriousness of the situation, so they sent a helicopter to his remote Scottish cabin. They winched down an officer who knocked on the door and found out that the man was indeed very ill and in need of immediate help. They were unable though to get the helicopter close enough to winch the man up, so they then had to call out the mountain rescue team to take the man to a more suitable location so that the helicopter could winch him up.

What seems like a convoluted route actually worked well due to the satellite technology and in the end it saved the mans life. It is also now known that the man is doing well and they expect him to be well enough to return to his bothy soon enough.
